What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu originates in Japan and literally means 'finger pressure'; is a form of bodywork which uses touch, pressure and stretches to relax, restore and revitalise the body and mind. Based on the same Traditional Chinese Medicine principles as acupuncture but instead of using needles it uses palm and finger pressure, stretching and opening techniques to promote energy and blood circulation in the body to improve and maintain health.
Shiatsu treatment diagnoses and treats the underlying patterns which cause weakness or energy blockages in the body, that can cause illness. For example, backache can occur as a result of a combination of factors; trauma, working too hard, poor posture, lack of excercise, long term frustration, and poor diet.
Treatment involves supporting the person in their areas of need, simultaneously bringing to their attention the patterns of behaviour which may be causing their condition. As this happens the person often begins to feel empowered to make changes they need in order to improve and maintain their health, with specific recommendations given from the practitioner.
As with acupuncture, shiatsu treats emotional/mental conditions as well as physical ones.
Shiatsu is used to treat specific condtitions but is also chosen as an effective way to maintain and promote good health.
